The Real Tulum Is Still Here
A letter from our end of the beach.
If you've been reading the travel news, you've probably heard that Tulum is having a quiet year. It's true. Fewer flights are landing, the hotel zone isn't as crowded as it was, and plenty of travelers are wondering what happened to the Tulum they fell in love with.
We want to talk about it openly. Here at Olas, we have always believed in being honest with our guests, even when the news isn't all sunshine.
What changed in Tulum
Tulum grew fast, maybe too fast. Small, low-rise beach hotels gave way to bigger buildings. Prices for taxis, dinners and drinks climbed. Traffic on the one road along the beach got heavier, sargassum seaweed washed ashore in record amounts, and several airlines cut their routes into the new Tulum airport. Add a slower economy back home for many travelers, and a few unsettling headlines, and it's no surprise people paused.
Many locals say Tulum lost a little of what made it special: the nature, the wellness, the authenticity. We understand that feeling. We've watched it happen around us too.
The real Tulum is still here
But here's what the headlines leave out: the real Tulum hasn't gone anywhere. You just have to know where to find it, and we are still here because we believe in that special magic.
At the far end of the beach road, right before the gates of Sian Ka'an, Olas is still holding down our end of the beach. Eight suites. A private stretch of sand. 100% solar-powered, built in step with the dunes and the jungle, and run by travelers for travelers, the same way we always have.
Just past our door, the Sian Ka'an's 1.3 million wild acres of lagoons, mangroves and channels stretch on toward the horizon. No high-rises, no crowds. Just ospreys over the mangroves, turquoise water, and the most magical place on earth as our neighbor.
Safe, tranquil, and just as we left it
Life at Olas moves at the pace of the waves. Mornings start slow with french press organic coffee from Chiapas. Days are barefoot, spent under a palapa or in a hammock handcrafted by local artisans. Evenings belong to the Sunset Rooftop, with the Caribbean on one side and the jungle on the other.
It's safe here. It's quiet here. And the slower season has brought us its own gifts: more room on the sand, more time to talk with the Olas Crew, and more of that easy, unhurried feeling that drew so many of us to Tulum in the first place. Mi casa es su casa.
Come see for yourself
Tulum is finding its way back to what it was always meant to be. We never left. If you've been missing the real Tulum, the one with sand between your toes and nothing on the horizon but sea, it's waiting for you here at the edge of Sian Ka'an.
We'd love to welcome you home.
Warm regards from Tulum,
The Olas Crew
